A Tree Grows in Pigtown

with 3 comments

I’ve always wondered why we don’t grow fruit trees in urban spaces and always concluded that there must have been some fatal flaw in the combination of city life and fruit trees.  So it was quite a surprise to walk home this week and stumble upon an apple tree near the sidewalk behind the former Save-A-Lot.

Believe it or not, the apples are not only edible, they’re sweet. Get them while they last: they’re falling off the branches as I type.

  2. I wonder how that tree started. Do you think there used to be an orchard there at one time, did someone plant it or did it come from a bird that ate an apple seed and deposited it as he flew by? At any rate, nature and urban life can flourish together. In fact, the trees can live off of all the carbon the city spews out, clean the air and give it back as oxygen. What a system! So, let’s plant some more!

  3. I’ve seen a lot of fruit trees in Baltimore especially in Charles Village. Oh, and there a couple apple trees on Clipper Park Dr. in Clipper Mill. Here’s post I wrote about a garden being planted in a front lawn in Baltimore: http://www.goforchange.com/2008/11/25/edible-estates-in-baltimore/
Also if still interested there an project that talks about urban uses for food, and energy in Baltimore: http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/project/2009/teams/team3/
Thanks for pointing out the fruit tree!!
